Jamie Savan - cornett

Jamie began playing cornett while reading Music at Oxford University in the mid 1990s and continued his studies with Jeremy West at the Royal College of Music, London, and with Bruce Dickey at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland. He holds a doctorate in performance practice from Birmingham University, and since 2010 has combined his professional interests in historically informed performance and academic research as a Lecturer in Music at Newcastle University.

He has been a member of His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts since 2005 and has researched and directed a number of innovative concert programmes and recording projects for the group, with a focus on the lesser-known contemporaries of Giovanni Gabrieli, including Giovanni Battista Grillo and Gioseffo Guami. As a cornettist he has performed with many of the leading period instrument ensembles on the European scene, and he is interested in exploring the full range of musical possibilities on his instrument, from Renaissance improvisation practices through baroque sonatas and classical concertos to different forms of contemporary music, including collaborations with jazz and folk musicians. He also enjoys playing cornetts of all shapes and sizes, including treble, mute, tenor and cornettino.
